Kids' Market Fun

Children's Activities 2008

Every Saturday at the market, Dave Bennett and volunteers will offer fun activities for young people. We'll have arts and crafts, exercise (yoga anyone? How about a bit of a spin with a hula hoop?), fun games to play with your food, and more!

April 26: Lambs and Wool! Jamie Root will bring several lambs to the market to see and maybe even pet! She'll also demonstrate spinning the wool, and will invite young people to help her out and learn about the process. Jamie spins, dyes, and weaves the wool from her sheep and makes hats, purses, toys, and all kinds of lovely products. Her products will be for sale.

May 10: Herbs for Mom. Plant small pots of herbs to give to your Mother on her special day. Learn about planting and care of small herbaceous plants, while creating a gift for you loved one.

August 16: Kids' Health Day will focus on healthy eating and living for young people. Learn how to help your school lunch become more local and wholesome with Heather Gibbons from the Healthy Food for Schools Program. The KC Public Library will be there with activities and free books to all those who arrive early. Whole Foods market will present information to kids and parents about healthy eating habits. More details, later!

September 6: Operation Wild Life returns for their annual visit to the market! They'll bring several birds, most likely an owl, a falcon, and possibly an eagle! The OWL volunteers will talk to you about wildlife rehabilitation, about how the birds live and eat in Kansas and Missouri, and you'll get to see the birds up close and personal.

October 18: Vegetable Music will be made using all available manner of hollowed vegetation. Flutist Mary Bunch will be on hand to show you what a zucchiniphone sounds like and help you create your very own instrument out of seasonal produce.

Beekeeping Demonstration: We're in the process of lining up a beekeeper to bring a glass observation bee hive so we can see the queen bees, the worker bees, and the drones in action. We'll have a date and more information soon.

Vermicomposting Demo: See how worms can bring a compost pile to life, and learn how you can build your own with or without red wigglers. We'll have a date and more information soon.
